You can also automate the blacklist checking by using: http://sucuri.net

It verifies your sites against multiple databases and alerts you if you get blacklisted.

Great article Jay. With so much short term gain mentality going on out there, not only is annoying the surfer detrimental to ones own sites, but it is a potential turn off to get money from that surfer again… anywhere.

Good post Carlos. I would add this: Remember to back up your databases. Many webmasters are used to having local copies of all the html, php, and other type of files that they typically upload and download via ftp.

They sometimes forget that the Database files are not in the ftp and must be accounted for separately.

I have a cron job on my servers. On the first of every month all databases are zipped up and emailed to me for local back-ups off the server.

You can just feel now the mainstream news companies are seething mad about their fall from prominence. I read that the highest rated cable news show today would be considered a dismal failure back before the 24 hour news stations were around. Now add in the Internet, and they can’t get everyone’s attention and it’s driving them to pressure the FTC. That, plus politicians don’t like it when their opponents make fake “grassroots” websites attacking them, and readers don’t know it’s a fake political ploy.
